Nats Sign A Guy With A Boring Name
Jerry Owens slides home safely., originally uploaded by photosbysjonas.
The first question that came to my mind when I heard the Nats signed outfielder Jerry Owens to a Minor League contract with an invite to Spring Training was, “Who?”
Then I thought about his name. How boring. How anticlimactic. His parent’s might as well have named him John Smith. Boring name players never get their name in lights and never are remembered. That is why my real name is Super Cosmiclious. Nationals.com:
A former second-round pick with the Expos in the 2003 First-Year Player Draft, Owens, 28, spent three-plus seasons with the White Sox before joining the Mariners’ organization this past season.
His best year in the Major Leagues was in 2007, when he hit .267 with one home run, 17 RBIs and 32 stolen bases in 93 games with the White Sox. In seven Minor League seasons, Owens has a .296 lifetime batting average, with 396 runs scored and a .364 on-base percentage.
Eh, boring. Nothing really big here. In the great scheme of things, this move won’t be remembered later on. It will be one of those things where for one reason or another the team will need an outfielder and suddenly Owens will run out onto the field to the cries of, “Where did this guy come from?!” Jim Riggleman will probably be screaming it the loudest.
In fact, I’m already forgetting this happened already. I actually finished this post about an hour ago, but then forgot about it, took some Christmas photos, ate dinner, squabbled with my father-in-law, did a little of this and that and then I remembered I had to post this.
Wait, post what again?
